Uber is taking the first step toward giving its users more control over their data by revamping its Privacy Settings system within the mobile app.
According to a report from The Verge, users will now be able to delete their account and data right from the app. Users can now go to the settings and delete their account, which will start a 30-day countdown. After the countdown ends, all the customer’s data—including from UberEats—will be deleted. It’s a striking change from the current system, which requires users to contact Uber’s support team to get their data deleted.
The Verge also notes that users can now “grant or withhold location data from within the app.”
The improved Privacy Settings are welcomed, but Uber isn’t completely changing its ways just yet. It’s still tracking users for five minutes after the ride ends even though the app is operating in the background.
This isn’t a move to address the endless controversy
Uber has been mired in controversy this year, from the DeleteUber movement to reports of a toxic working environment within the company. Last week, there was a report that claimed Uber almost got kicked out of the App Store for spying on iPhones even after the app was deleted. There has been a distrust growing between users and Uber, but this latest move gives some control back to its users.
An Uber spokesperson stated that the update isn’t a response to the controversy or user worry over data, just an ongoing improvement of the overall experience.
“We’ve been working on improving this [account deletion] experience for more than a year,” stated the Uber spokesperson. Uber is probably holding its cards close to the chest, but we’ll take the updated controls either way.
