Some fans of Overwatch are a bit frustrated by the slow pace of map release, citing that we’re going to see roughly two new ones every year. Well, that’s not exactly the case.
Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan took the time to respond to these complaints on the Battle.net forums. The good news? We’re getting new maps, and some experimental stuff.
We currently have 3 maps in development, all past the initial playtesting phase that are “standard” maps (QP/Comp). While something could always change, all 3 of those are looking likely for a release this year.
We also have 3 non-standard maps in development (these won’t go in QP/Comp).
We also have a few other experiments going on.
Hopefully this will satisfy some of what you’re looking for. We want to play on these maps as badly as you guys do. We’ll work as fast as we can!
Three standard, three non-standard
Obviously, the three standard maps will be a lot like what we have with our current roster of stuff like King’s Row, Eichenwalde, Oasis and the lot. The non-standard stuff? Kaplan doesn’t explicitly say, but I imagine we’ll see arcade-friendly maps like Ecopoint Antarctica, home to 3v3 and that silly Mei snowball game.
Either way, more free content is still int he pipeline. Stay tuned.
