Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy gameplay trailer – What year is it?!

Activision has uploaded the latest gameplay footage for the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy over on the official Facebook page, and it has old timers like me scratching our heads.

I mean, this 2017 release has a 1-up system complete with an in-game icon that will give you a “free guy.” This concept was phased out of gaming a long time ago when the kids decided that they didn’t like getting game overs. This gameplay footage from the “Upstream” stage also has an incredibly linear level design, meaning only one direction in which the hero really needs to run and not a whole lot of branches and secrets to be found.

Where the past and present collide

And yet, the graphics are something out of a modern hit. Crash’s insanely advanced character model is one thing, but the foliage and water effects make the whole experience look so lifelike. Here, we have the pure, unadulterated point where 90s design and 2010s graphics clash like tie-dye t-shirts, and I’m not entirely sure what to think!

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will be released for the PlayStation 4 on June 30.
