Final Fantasy XII is one of the most beautiful games that ever came to the PlayStation 2. It captured the essence of the fantasy world Ivalice better than any other 3D game, but more importantly, the designers had the foresight to originally create its resources in high definition. The PlayStation 2 version of the game actually overly compresses its character models and geographic locations for standard definition.
Their full potential had to wait until 2017 to finally be seen.
Ten years after its release, we get to see this foresight pay off with a definitive HD remaster. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age shows off how brilliant the game truly looks, and the latest batch of screenshots won’t be the last to drive that point home.
Where else can we expect to find this release?
I’m excited to play Final Fantasy XII on my PlayStation 4, but I might hold off given Square Enix’s other options. I remember that Final Fantasy X|X2 HD Remaster was originally planned to come to the PlayStation 3 before arriving on the PS Vita, Steam, and eventually PlayStation 4.
While I think we can safely put aside the PlayStation 3 as a potential platform for this remaster, I’m wondering if Square Enix still sees any value in putting this on the Vita. Final Fantasy XII is one of those grindy RPGs that you can take with you and put a little progress into here and there. It would be a great portable game, that’s for sure.
If not, the standard PlayStation 4 and PC release would be fine. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age will be released for the PlayStation 4 on July 11.
