Platinum Games would love to put “all of their games” on PC

Bayonetta’s surprise release on Steam this week earned developer Platinum Games a much-needed round of applause. 2016 was sort of rough for the company with a few duds and cancellations, but 2017 is already looking up! NieR: Automata is one of the best-reviewed games of 2017, and Bayonetta shows that the company can work its way around a complicated PC port.

So, what’s next? If it were up to Platinum Games, it would love to port all of its games to the PC, according to an interview with PC Gamer.

The PC market is huge and can definitely not be ignored. We are absolutely aware of that, and we’ve always felt this way.

We’ve always had a positive stance towards porting our titles to PC, but the decisions as to which platforms we release our games on, and which platforms are the main focus for the games we make are largely made by the publishers, so this is not something we can decide on our own.

However, most third party publishers nowadays realize the PC should not be ignored, so I believe we should be able to become more actively involved in the PC market from here on out. We still feel strongly about putting more consideration into the PC market. If our current efforts prove successful, this will only make PC development more attractive.

What’s holding the company back besides time and resources? Well, publishing rights, of course! Platinum Games is a developer, but it’s never actually peddled its own games onto the marketplace. It needs the permission of the publishers who support it, primarily SEGA.

If it were up to us, we’d port all of our games to PC, but it all depends on the publishers.

Which Platinum Games could come to the PC?

The launch of Bayonetta puts the game in the same group as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, The Legend of Korra, Transformers: Devastation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, and NieR: Automata as games that are already available on PC.

What does that leave us with? Vanquish is obviously the big fish of the group. Platinum Games’ third-person shooter, which was helmed by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, is in a class of its own in regards to visuals, intense action, and that clean look that accompanies all of the company’s games. If it were to do any other ports, this is the one it should and most likely would do. Because it’s backed by SEGA, it has a chance!

Other SEGA backed games aren’t quite as likely with MadWorld, Anarchy Reigns, and Infinite Space making up the rest.

And then there is Star Fox Command and Star Fox Guard, which are never happening since Nintendo won’t allow its characters to be put onto any other platform. It might get generous with The Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2 some day, letting off some restrictions since the Wii U is no longer around. You never know, though.
