The first trailer for Thor: Ragnarok has finally arrived, and it’s clear that Thor and Asgard are not going to have a very good time.
When a trailer for a Thor (Chris Hemsworth) film opens with him in chains and then cuts to the destruction of Mjölnir at the hands of Hela (Cate Blanchett ), obviously things are not going well. Follow this up with Asgard having destruction rained down on it, and this film is not going to be a happy one.
The trailer finally gives us our first good looks at the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) on the oddly colored battle world where Thor is taken to be entered into gladiatorial competitions. But the first moment of real levity comes as he meets his opponent.
He’s a friend from work!
The inclusion of the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) in this film has been known for ages, but seeing him in his full gladiator armor just looks awesome. And learning that Thor refers to being a part of the Avengers like he would an office job is just highly amusing.
Taika Waititi (Hunt for the Wilderpeople) has brought an entirely new visual language to the Marvel films as evidenced by this trailer. Thor: Ragnarok doesn’t look quite like anything else we have seen from the House of Ideas as of yet, and that is certainly not a bad thing to change things up every so often.
Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on Nov. 3.
