Smaller channels looking to cash in on videos with relatively low view counts are, from this point on, out of luck. YouTube has announced that channels must go over 10,000 views total before content creators can monetize their videos.
“This new threshold,” YouTube writes in the blog post announcing the news, “gives us enough information to determine the validity of a channel.” The idea is that this new view mark will serve to cut down on channels that violate community guidelines or abuse YouTube’s systems to cash in.
Moving forward, getting into the ad program requires a bit more work
YouTube indicated that we’ll see a change to how new channels get into the YouTube Partner Program.
In a few weeks, we’ll also be adding a review process for new creators who apply to be in the YouTube Partner Program. After a creator hits 10k lifetime views on their channel, we’ll review their activity against our policies. If everything looks good, we’ll bring this channel into YPP and begin serving ads against their content. Together these new thresholds will help ensure revenue only flows to creators who are playing by the rules.
Some frustration has come up from smaller YouTube channels in light of this decision, but I’ll assert that regularly uploading quality content will more than likely afford you the chance to crack 10k views quickly. How long it takes to gain approval for the YouTube Partner Program is the more questionable part of this announcement. YouTube isn’t known for their speed when it comes to community decisions.
