Samsung drops the shutter on digital camera business, report claims

Samsung has decided to stop producing and selling traditional digital cameras, according to an unnamed company official. The South Korean company will continue to develop camera technology for a new product category, but the point-and-shoot business it started back in 1997 is no more.

Samsung hasn’t launched a new entry in the camera market since March 2015’s mirrorless NX500, so this news is hardly surprising. There were no whispers suggesting a new Samsung camera would be dropping anytime soon, so fans will have already expected it to bow out of the camera business. Now that is all but confirmed.

“We no longer produce and sell digital cameras,” a Samsung official told Korean outlet The Investor on the condition of anonymity. “But we will create a new camera product category to continue the business.” The report claims that these cameras will go into smartphones and other mobile devices, as well as Samsung’s Gear 360 camera.

Without official confirmation from a named Samsung official, we have to take this report with some skepticism. But again, it’s news we were expecting, so it’s difficult to believe it could be inaccurate.

After launching its first point-and-shoot, Samsung hit its peak in the camera industry in the mid-2000s, but it has struggled to compete with larger camera brands in recent years. Even the likes of Canon and Nikon have been struggling as more and more people begin to rely solely on smartphones and dedicated camera sales fall.

“Samsung lost its competitiveness in the entry segment with the robust growth of smartphone cameras,” said an industry source. “Even when Japanese big names such as Canon and Nikon who have more than 100 years of history are struggling in the premium market, Samsung seems to have no option but to leave the market.”
