Twitter is reportedly looking to ink deals with pay-TV broadcasters like ESPN to let users watch live channels within its mobile application; though, in order to do so, they’ll need to hold an active subscription to each network.
Obviously, the main intention is that watching TV through the Twitter application will drive engagement, as users will be able to read and post tweets about what they’re watching, without having to bounce between multiple platforms.
The social networking giant has been heavily pushing into the live TV market in recent months. Last year, it signed a deal with ESPN to stream Wimbledon matches and also purchased NFL American football rights — but it’s now seeking broader partnerships.
“Bringing the video forward [onto Twitter itself] allows us to give the consumer on one screen the things they’re talking about and [a] timeline of the best tweets on Twitter at that moment in time,” Anthony Noto, the company’s chief operating officer, told The Telegraph.
