Samsung Galaxy S8 hands-on: Edging toward perfection

It’s one thing to see the Galaxy S8 in pictures and on video. It’s completely different seeing and holding the device in person.

After spending a few fleeting minutes with the new device, I can safely say Samsung has truly outdone itself, creating a phone that’s superior to everything the company has ever done. Fans who were disappointed by the Note 7 recall will have renewed faith in Samsung once they get their hands on the device.

What’s most impressive about the S8 is how assured and confident it feels. The level of quality and polish is astounding, building on the innovations Samsung has made in the past. The device looks and feels better than last year’s S7 Edge and Note 7, two of the company’s most alluring handsets. And, internally, it’s a beast.

Equipped with a Snapdragon 835 chip, 4GB of RAM, and a 5.8-inch Quad HD+ display, the S8 is among the most powerful mobile devices we’ve ever seen. We’re particularly curious to see how the Snapdragon 835 chip, which uses a 10nm manufacturing process, will hold up long term. The processor will reportedly provide a 40 percent decrease in power consumption, while offering a 27 percent boost in performance. In theory, that should mean improved performance and battery life.

We got to spend limited time with the S8, so we can’t comment on the device’s numerous features, camera quality, or battery life. But, rest assured, we’ll take a deeper dive once we get our hands on a review unit. Our initial impression is that the S8 is the best phone on the market. See why in the hands-on video above.
