Google Play Store gets ‘Free App of the Week’ section

Google’s Play Store has gained a “Free App of the Week” section that offers Android users a premium, paid title at no cost for a limited time. The game Card Wars – Adventure Time (normally $2.99) is the first app to be added, and you have one week to get your hands on it.

Apple has been giving away premium iOS apps for years via its own Free App of the Week promotion, but Google left it up to developers to decide when their titles should be available at no charge. Now the company is finally catching up with an update to the Play Store that rolled out over the weekend.

Users in some markets will now see a Free App of the Week section, where you can currently download Card Wars — Adventure Time, the popular card battling game with a humorous Adventure Time spin. Users will have one week to download each title, then a new one will be added. Once you’ve claimed it, it’s yours to keep permanently.

If you don’t see the Free App of the Week promotion yet, you should still be able to download this game for free in most markets simply by searching for it. It seems its price tag has been dropped even for those who don’t see the new section yet.
