Call of Duty images appear to confirm WWII setting

If some newly leaked images are indeed legitimate, then it seems like Call of Duty really is going back to its roots as a WWII shooter this fall. Youtuber TheFamilyVideoGamers have acquired some images that, if real, make it undeniable. It certainly matches well with previous word from Activision that the series would be going back to its roots.

Call of Duty leaks are nothing new, and this one seems to be solid. The images showed up in Reddit’s WWII community, and a mod there states they were able to confirm that the leak is legitimate. That’s not the same as an official confirmation, of course, and should be taken with a grain of salt for the time being.

Is it time to go back home?

In the late 1990s and into the early 2000s, games like Medal of Honor and Battlefield 1942 covered WWII from just about every angle that they could cover, as long as it was down the barrel of a gun. Call of Duty 2 was one of the very first Xbox 360 games, as well.

As game publishers tend to do, though, they got a whiff of blood and everyone went after the era, alternately trying to simulate it better or make a more dramatic story of (usually) American victory over the axis powers.

These days, though, it’s been a while since we’ve seen a real WWII game. Activision and EA did such a good job of playing out the modern setting that one tried to go into the far future while the other went back to the first war to make use of tanks and planes. Maybe we’re ready for a new game that renders the war in greater fidelity than ever before.
