Instagram has evolved into a great place for creatives to display their work—something the platform aims to capitalize on in the future.
Bloomberg reports the service will take on Yelp by allowing users to book appointments with businesses. For example, if you see a haircut you like, you may be able to go to that salon’s Instagram profile and book an appointment. The movie is similar to features offered by OpenTable and Yelp.
Instagram plans to roll out the new feature over the coming months, providing business accounts with a way to measure engagement beyond likes and follows.
“When someone books an appointment, that’s not a ‘like’ or a ‘follow,’ that’s actual action,” Instagram’s James Quarles told Bloomberg.
The new feature won’t change the platform’s core focus, but it does makes it a little more transactional. The new feature will create a more immediate connection between businesses and its followers.
Unsurprisingly, over 80-percent of Instagram users follow a business, according to Quarles, which explains why the new feature is on the way.
