Owner tracks down stolen Tesla through smartphone app

A resourceful Tesla owner took the law into his own hands and tracked down his stolen Tesla with the help of a smartphone app.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the assailant stole the car from a residence in Escondido and drove over 40 miles north via the I-15 highway in Southern California. When the owner of the Tesla discovered his car was stolen, he turned to his iPhone’s Tesla app to track his car to a shopping center. Once he verified his car was indeed in the shopping center, he contacted law enforcement and the thief was arrested.

Tesla’s smartphone app, which received a big update not too long ago, can completely control the automaker’s vehicles. It can unlock the car without a key, summon the car from a parking lot, turn on the car’s AC system, and even track its whereabouts—something the budding thief found out the hard way.
