Sonic Mania sadly delayed into the summer, SEGA slaps a title on Project Sonic 2017

Two bits of news regarding SEGA and the two new Sonic the Hedgehog games. First, the franchise’s gorgeous 16-bit reboot Sonic Mania will sadly not be making its Spring 2017 deadline. Instead, SEGA’s Aaron Webber confirmed at SXSW that the game has been pushed back into in the summer.

Sonic Mania is the most exciting Sonic the Hedgehog game in years since it finally channels the 16-bit aesthetic that people happily remember from the SEGA Genesis days. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and all of the other throwbacks to date have come up short in that regard.

It’s not the only Sonic the Hedgehog game coming out in 2017, though. At the same panel, SEGA confirmed that the other mysterious Project Sonic 2017 now has an official title, one that is not Sonic Generations 2. Instead, it will be called Sonic Forces.

I thought this was supposed to be Sonic Generations 2

2017 is shaping up to be a solid year for Sonic the Hedgehog. The image of apocalyptic robot destruction is a little disheartening, but I think SEGA might actually have an idea or two in mind that borrows from Sonic Generations based on the previous footage we’ve seen from it. I believe SEGA when it says that it is trying to up its game and bring back a sense of consistent quality to its flagship franchise.

And if not, Sonic Mania is still drop dead stunning in every regard, so that is a nice fallback plan.

Sonic Mania will be released in Summer 2017 for the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Sonic Forces will be released a few months later during the holidays.
