The beloved text-only About Status is returning to WhatsApp

Last month, WhatsApp replaced its traditional text-based Status option with a Snapchat Stories clone. However, after backlash from presumably a large chunk of its 1.2 billion monthly active users, the company has decided to bring back the ability for users to set an About Status from the (you guessed it) About section of the application.

“We heard from our users that people missed the ability to set a persistent text-only update in their profile, so we’ve integrated this feature into the ‘About’ section in profile settings. Now, the update will appear next to profile names anytime you view contacts, such as when creating a new chat or looking at Group info,” said WhatsApp in a statement issued to TechCrunch.

The new Snapchat-like Status won’t disappear, though. It will, instead, function alongside the regular About Status, retaining its position in the navigation bar. The firm added that it’ll continue to build on the feature, which “gives people fun and engaging ways to share photos, videos and GIFs with their friends and family throughout their day.”

When exactly will it return?

Fortunately, users won’t have to wait long for the About Status to return to their device. It should begin rolling out to Android sometime over the course of the next week, and to iOS “soon.” Oh, yeah… and it started showing up in the Android Beta of WhatsApp last week, so if you’re enrolled, you should already have access to it.
