Bringing Overwatch to the Nintendo Switch would be “very challenging”

“I’m loving the Switch! My second favorite gaming platform of all time is the 3DS.” That’s from Overwatch Game Director and all around cool guy Jeff Kaplan on Reddit.

When someone asked if the developer was “up to the challenge of being on Switch,” Kaplan opened with that bit. I consider that Kaplan’s effort to put the good news ahead of the bad, but maybe I’m just being pessimistic. Here’s the next bit of what he wrote.

Getting OW on the Switch is very challenging for us. But we’re always open minded about exploring possible platforms.

I blame it on the Switch’s portability

Really, Blizzard could find bringing Overwatch to the Switch challenging for a plethora of reasons. It could be tough to justify the development expense. It could be that the difficulty stems from having to constantly optimize and patch for four different platforms instead of only three.

My money’s on the portable nature of the Nintendo Switch. The system was designed to go docked and undocked all the time, and playing without internet is a constant for a lot of players.

Overwatch is a game that demands a constant, stable and strong internet connection. It has no single player mode. The Switch would practically demand one.

Do you think Overwatch would work on the Nintendo Switch?
