Edgar Wright’s latest project, Baby Driver, just dropped its first trailer and it looks like an insane take on car heist movies.
The trailer introduces us to Baby, portrayed by Ansel Elgort, who as a young child he suffered an accident that left him with a ringing in his ear. To combat this, he has crafted a perfect playlist that gets him into the zone during his getaway escapades, which look like they belong in a Fast and the Furious movie.
One day he meets a beautiful girl (Lily James) that makes him reconsider his current employment, but it’s not easy to get out.
The movie looks like a satire take on car heist movies like Ryan Gosling’s Drive and the Fast and the Furious movies. Those movies rely on uber action scenes or hyper serious tones. This is not too different with what Edgar Wright did with Shaun of the Dead—a satirical take on horror movies—and Hot Fuzz—a satirical take on buddy cop movies.
Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, Jon Bernthal and Jon Hamm round of the rest of the impressive cast.
Edgar Wright is one of the best original movie directors around
Last we heard of Edgar Wright before Baby Driver was his departure from Ant Man due to creative differences with Marvel. He tends to stick to original material that give him complete creative control. Baby Driver looks to be perfect for Wright.
His last movie was The World’s End in 2013 with recurring collaborators Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman and Bill Nighy. Baby Driver includes a whole new cast he’s never worked with but with Wright at the helm, it should be one hell of a ride.
Baby Driver is in theaters August 11, 2017.
