I Am Setsuna Temporal Battle Arena trailer, performance issues on the Switch

The Nintendo Switch version of Square Enix’s excellent JRPG I Am Setsuna comes with two added bonuses over the PlayStation 4 and PC builds. One, it is portable and can be taken anywhere. Two, it has exclusive access to the Temporal Battle Arena DLC, which will be added to the game next month in April.

The Temporal Battle Arena pits players against one another in a battle to the death. Your three best characters versus an opponent’s three best characters. Of course, I Am Setsuna has many layers added to its strategy thanks to the multiple ways you can adjust equipment and Spritenight spells, so the combinations will be limitless.

A trailer from PAX East 2017 lays out the basics of this new PvP mode.

Admittedly, as much as I love I Am Setsuna, it’s not the most exciting footage. It looks a bit rushed, and Square Enix would benefit from dressing the arena up a little better.

Game doesn’t run at the same stats as the PlayStation 4 build

For these two added bonuses, you’ll have to take a hit in performance on the Nintendo Switch. I Am Setsuna only runs at 30 fps on the Nintendo Switch, reduced from the 60fps it runs on the PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch version also doesn’t feature several of the same lighting effects that the PlayStation 4 build has.

Those differences are captured in the video below by Digital Foundry.
