Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia trailer – This series just won’t hold back

Fire Emblem will not be denied its rightful place among the best franchises that Nintendo has ever published. After spending the first half of its life relatively unknown to those of us on Western shores and the second half battling for attention in a crowded JRPG market, the last three entries have achieved unheralded success and name-recognition.

Fire Emblem Awakening, Fates, and Heroes have the series right where Nintendo wants it to evolve.

However, we’re going to go digging in the past before moving forward once again. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia is a new attempt to update one of the franchise’s original games, Fire Emblem Gaiden, from the days of the original Famicom in Japan. Seeing that fans are hungry for the series’ full history, this is Nintendo’s best bet in delivering something that can both sell well and deliver some prestige.

Here is the latest trailer for the game.

Not sure what’s wrong with the originals

Remakes are fine, but there really is nothing like the real thing. Plenty of Fire Emblem games remain unlocalized from the earlier days of its existence, but if Fire Emblem Echoes is a hint at Nintendo’s future plans, completely remaking a game from the ground up is just easier to justify than localizing a 20 or 25-year-old retro title.

It’s not ideal for people who want to experience the true history behind the franchise, but at least it’s something. If anything, it’s a new game created in the fashion of the previous two, so hooray!

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia launches for the Nintendo 3DS on May 19.
