Meet Talion’s army with 16 minutes of Middle-earth: Shadow of War gameplay

When Warner Bros. unveiled Middle-earth: Shadow of War last week, they promised us some gameplay to drool over. Now, we have a whopping 16 minutes of gameplay to over-analyze.

Where Talion was a one-man army in Shadow of Mordor, he’s now one man leading an army, and much of the video revolves around meeting that army and getting familiar with how they behave and how they factor into the nemesis system.

Watch out for flying limbs

Shadow of War seems to offer more customization than ever before, both in terms of Talion and his army and in the enemies he fights. Every boss is unique to your game, and even their lairs are decorated to reflect them. Meanwhile, smaller enemies can still come back to life to pursue grudges. But now, you have an army at your back, and a sharpshooter can stop an attacking orc from getting the drop on you. You’ll also get a base and war chiefs to recruit and level up.

The narration over the footage promises that each player’s game will be totally unique from everyone else’s. There’s always the danger that, when everything is special, nothing is special – see No Man’s Sky – but the nemesis system was a huge selling point for the original, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, and one that is loved by fans and critics alike. The scope of Middle-earth: Shadow of War looks huge, but they might just be able to pull it off.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War releases for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on August 22.
