Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s Wii U GamePad features were cut, and here’s why

Back in 2014, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma showed up at the Game Awards in a pre-recorded video with The Legend of Zelda on the Wii U. This was back before it had the Breath of the Wild subtitle.

In that video, Miyamoto and Aonuma clearly show off the GamePad’s touchscreen functionality. Those functions, as some of you likely know, are absent in the released version of the game. Here’s the clip.

Cut that feature!

Those features were cut, and IGN found out why at GDC. Breath of the Wild Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi explained that, “Once we began to develop the game in tandem for the Switch, we aimed to provide the same gameplay experience across both on Switch and Wii U.”

“In doing our testing without the touch features we noticed looking back and forth between the Gamepad and the screen actually took a little something away from this type of Zelda game…

…Without the touch features it actually turned out to be a really strong gameplay experience. After more experimentation and testing out, we realized that this is the best way to experience the game. That’s how we ended up with the current gameplay style in the production version.”

We’ve had it for almost a week now, and we’re happy with how it plays sans touchscreen functionality. How about you?
