Way back when, Zelda Series Producer Eiji Aonuma confirmed that Epona, the legendary horse from Ocarina of Time, would be in Breath of the Wild. He didn’t say how or when, but he said she’d be there.
This morning, while I was procrastinating ahead of work, I decided to try two of the three Zelda amiibo I have. I have Wolf Link, but I know what he does. He brings in… Wolf Link. What about Toon Link and Link from the original amiibo run? I think that latter Link is based on the design from Twilight Princess.
How do you scan amiibo in Breath of the Wild? Hit the options menu, and toggle the “Use amiibo” option on. From there, it shows up as a rune on your Slate, just like Cryonis, Bombs, Magnesis and Stasis. Activate the rune and scan your amiibo. On the Wii U, that’s done on the GamePad. On the Switch, place the amiibo on the right Joy-Con’s analog stick.
That Link amiibo, pictured first in the gallery below, dropped Epona. You’ll see her, what happens when you register her and her stats below.
You can’t rename a legend!
I only have two other horses, but Epona’s four-star rating is the best I’ve managed so far.
This seems to only work with the Link amiibo. I’m not sure if you can find Epona any other way, though that’s totally possible. If you’ve managed to get her through other means, sound off in the comments below!
I did find this Link amiibo on Amazon, but it’s pricey. Perhaps look for it elsewhere, but here’s the shop’s page.
