Margot Robbie to star in Robin Hood spinoff

Margot Robbie has been tapped to play Maid Marian, of Robin Hood fame, in an adventure that will introduce an exciting twist to the classic tale.

Deadline reports Marian will be a “truly gritty” film that will be a cross between Braveheart and Game of Thrones. But rather than focus on Robin Hood, the film will make Marian the star.

Here’s the movie’s reported synopsis:

After a conspiracy to conquer England in which the love of her life Robin Hood dies before her eyes, Marian picks up the cause to lead her people into a pivotal war. She comes to power, charging into a battle that will not only decide the fate of the kingdom but will see her don the mantle of the man she loved. In the process, she rises as a legend herself.

It’s a cool twist that will take the classic tale in a new direction. There have been numerous films based on the Robin Hood story but Marian will be completely new, possibly laying the groundwork for a fresh franchise.

There’s another Robin Hood movie coming

Robbie’s Marian is not the same Robin Hood movie scheduled for a March 2018 release, which will star Taran Egerton and Ben Mendelsohn.

Hollywood’s obsession with Robin Hood extends many decades, from the early 20th century right on up to a 2010 epic directed by Ridley Scott. Marian will pivot the focus onto an important character in the famous folklore, giving her the movie she deserves.

No director or release has been announced for Marian, but with Robbie attached to star, those pieces will fall into place in due time.
