LG may have finally found its winning formula with the new G6. The South Korean company today announced that it has received over 40,000 pre-orders for its new handset in the four days since pre-orders went live. That’s a whopping 10,000 orders per day, on average.
The G6 was one of the highlights of Mobile World Congress last week. It wowed smartphone fans with its 5.7-inch FullVision display with 18:9 aspect ratio, its improved camera with secondary sensor and wide-angle lens, and its gorgeous design. The package is made even sweeter by the accessories LG is giving away in many markets.
In South Korea, for instance, G6 adopters get display protection that offers one free repair should you break the handset’s screen, and a genuine G6 case with each purchase. Buyers also get big discounts on official G6 accessories, wireless headphones, and Nescafe coffee machines.
Like all high-end smartphones, the G6 is costly. Although pricing has not been confirmed for the U.S. yet, in the U.K., it will cost a whopping £699 (approx. $857) off-contract. This clearly isn’t putting too many people off based on the early pre-order numbers.
But there is a big hurdle for LG right around the corner. At the end of this month, Samsung will announce its much-anticipated Galaxy S8 series, which is expected to bring big design improvements, larger displays, and features like iris scanning. It will almost certainly ensure that strong demand for the G6 is short-lived.
That is, of course, assuming the Galaxy S8 doesn’t ship with any battery issues like the Galaxy Note 7.
