Twitter now lets users mute “eggs” in anti-harassment effort

Twitter is finally taking better aim at harassment on its platform. One of the ways it’s doing this is by allowing users to automatically mute “eggs.”

Here’s the rub from Twitter.

You’ll be able to mute “eggs.” That is, accounts that still use the default Twitter egg avatar because they haven’t uploaded profile photos or images. You’ll also be able to mute accounts without confirmed email addresses or phone numbers. This at least adds a few more steps for trolls to get through.

Typically, the most toxic users on Twitter are ones creating accounts specifically to harass. They often don’t even go through the process of actually setting up their account fully. Being able to mute users who haven’t completed these steps may slow down harassing a bit.

This won’t stop trolls

Trolls are gonna troll. They will find ways to make their accounts meet the minimum standards. This could slow the drip, though, and that might be enough to keep some users happy.

Twitter has a long term problem, and it needs a long term solution.
