Samsung unveils new Gear VR headset with controller

Samsung recently announced a new Gear VR headset that will ship with an included controller, something that users will probably welcome with open arms. The device is aptly named “Gear VR with controller powered by Oculus.”

The new Gear VR controller offers a touchpad, not unlike the Daydream View VR controller, which should make it much easier to control and select content. Previously, users had to buy a Bluetooth controller or use a trackpad on the side of the headset. It also features a trigger that will enable new functions within games, a home button, volume buttons and a back key. A wrist strap is included to prevent the controller from flying across the room.

Other features include two 42mm lenses with 101-degree field of view, which Samsung says will help cut down on motion sickness from distortion. There’s support for microUSB and USB-C, a nod to the upcoming support for the latter in the Galaxy S8. The device currently supports the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

Wait for a bundle

Pricing wasn’t announced, but I bet Samsung sells it for about $100 and offers promotional bundles with the Galaxy S8.
