Shortly after we learned Ares would be the antagonist in Wonder Woman, speculation began about who would be playing the character. Warner Bros. and the cast were mum on the subject, but we’ve learned who will portray the Greek god of war and mortal adversary to the warrior princess.
According to Batman News, David Thewlis will be portraying Ares. The British native, best known for his role as Lupin in the Harry Potter movies, has had an acting career that’s spanned over 30 years.
Ares first appeared in Wonder Woman #1 in 1942 and has been a constant foe of hers ever since. As the son of Olympian gods Zeus and Heras, he possesses immense strength and endurance, but his greatest weapon is his ability to maneuver conflict and strategy into the destruction and folly of his enemies.
Details of Thewlis’ portrayal of the iconic villain have been mysteriously missing. He was nowhere to be found in the first trailer of the movie and Ares’ role in the film was only revealed last month. This was apparently due to the hybrid appearance of the character, which involves both CGI and practical effects.
Ares will be a worthy foe for Wonder Woman
Ares’ origin dates back 50 years. Throughout his history, he was always a worthy adversary of Wonder Woman. Warner Bros. picked a good choice to battle the warrior princess in her first solo outing. Hopefully we get our first look at him when the next trailer for the movie is released.
Wonder Woman will be in theaters June 22.
