Alien: Covenant prologue offers an extended look at the doomed crew

We all know it won’t end well for the crew when Alien: Covenant hits theaters in May. But, before things get too crazy, check out this four-minute prologue, which shows the team (including Michael Fassbender, who is playing synthetic androids Walter and David), futzing around like everything’s hunky dory.

While the prologue is fairly tame, there’s some obvious underlying tension, like the crew’s disdain for James Franco’s character, and the jealousy Billy Crudup’s character has for other crew members.

Apparently, Franco plays the original captain of the Covenant spaceship, so of course something is going to happen to him. Crudup winds up taking over as the ship’s new leader.

Meanwhile, we get a pretty good look at Katherine Waterston’s Daniels, an actor who recently delighted fans in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Here is the movie’s not-at-all ominous synopsis

Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant, which includes Walter, a rebuild of the android David, a survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition, find what they believe to be an uncharted paradise. However, said paradise soon reveals itself to be nothing but a terrifyingly dangerous and hellish world inhabited by the original David, and monstrous creatures that start to hunt them.

As if that wasn’t ominous enough, the video above is titled “The Last Supper,” which refers to the final meal Jesus shared with his Apostles in Jerusalem before his crucifixion. The scene is also a clear nod to the dinner scene in the original Alien. So, yeah, the crew is pretty much doomed.

We’ll see how it all plays out when Alien: Covenant hits theaters on May 19.
