The Legend of Zelda’s Japanese TV spot is better than the Super Bowl ad… if you’re a nerd for the series

Yeah, we had a pretty cool Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild ad air during the Super Bowl this year. It featured a heart-thumping hip-hop song and all the interior decorating of a Millenial’s apartment you could ever hope for from a modern day entertainment trailer.

However, just for comparison’s sake, look how Japan handles the long-running franchise. “Majestic” is the closest word I can think of…

Notice how nobody speaks during the trailer…

No explanations necessary, and no lyrics could possibly do it justice. Just the latest rendition of that eternal theme, epic shots of Link doing his thing, and the grace to let the game speak for itself.  If I saw this without knowing the franchise, I’d buy the game in a heartbeat.

Good thing I’m already fawning for this game thanks to 30 years of being one of these self-proclaimed nerds. Instead, I can just bask in how jittery this trailer makes me feel. Goosebumps!

Excellent, Nintendo of Japan! Good for you!

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launches for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U on March 3.
