It’s been a while since we heard a peep out of ZeniMax studio MachineGames, the developer behind Wolfentein: The New Order and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. A couple years, in fact. Long enough to, I don’t know, develop a new game.
And indeed, the team is a good ways into the creation of a new game, according to Bethesda VP Pete Hines who spoke in vague but interest-piquing terms during a recent chat with the Kinda Funny Gamescast.
“MachineGames has been hard at work on something, which I can tell you I have played,” Hines said. “It is f***ing bananas. And I can’t wait to show what it actually is.”
Evidence says more Wolfenstein is likely
Personally, I wouldn’t argue with another Wolfenstein game. The New Order was excellent, and right now seems good for another game about Wolfenstein‘s particular subject matter. But if they’re going to grace another existing or new idea with the same craftsmanship that went into The New Order, I’m not going to argue with that, either.
New Wolfenstein seems likely, though. At their E3 2016 show, Bethesda showed a quick MS-DOS-style C:\ prompt on the screen, which featured three entries:
The dates next to New_Order and New_Blood are the release dates of their respective games. New_Colossus is a poem referenced by Wolfenstein hero BJ Blazkowicz at the very end of The New Order. That poem, as noted by VG247, is partially inscribed on the Statue of Liberty. This is a stretch, but that could suggest the sequel featuring BJ taking the fight against the alt-history Nazis to American soil.
Bethesda’s focus right now is on the sci-fi thriller Prey, which arrives on May 5, but we’re expecting to see something about ol’ wolfy at E3 this June.
