Torment: Tides of Numenera has a brilliant setting unlike any other RPG out there

Torment: Tides of Numenera is finally heading to release nearly four years after it wrapped up its record-setting Kickstarter campaign. A long time to be sure, but with the size and choices that this game provides, you’ll be able to see where inExile sunk most of that time once you play.

A new trailer and official description of the game’s plot has been published to prep the game for its Feb. 28 release, and I suggest you give it a watch. If you’re sick of elves, dwarves, high-fantasy, and Heroes of Light, this might just be the RPG for you.

A billion years in the future a man discovered a way to cheat death. A seeker of knowledge and wisdom, his ultimate goal was to leave an unforgettable mark on the world. In his quest for everlasting legacy, he discovered ancient technology – the Numenera – that allowed him to transfer his consciousness to a body of his own design. Thus he became known as the Changing God.

In a bid to escape death, the Changing God inadvertently awakened a fearsome, ancient beast known as The Sorrow – a terrifyingly powerful guardian of balance, bent on destroying the Changing God and all of his Castoffs.

It is at this point that the dramatic events of your birth unfold and your story to answer who you are, and what your legacy might be, begins…

And you thought Horizon Zero Dawn was going to be open

inXile Entertainment and Techland Publishing will be releasing this game in direct competition with Horizon Zero Dawn, and while I have no doubt that the PlayStation 4 open-world extravaganza is going to pummel it to pieces financially, I can’t wait to see the reaction to the different definitions of “open” that these two games deliver on.

One has a big map with waypoints and missions to accomplish, and it seems pretty standard for what is being offered in the video game world these days. The other offers an infinite number of choices on how to progress through its story, opening new paths, plot paths, and objectives with each and every decision made.

If it is able to live up to its predecessor, Planescape: Torment, something tells me that we can’t even fathom the depths this game can take us to anymore. Such depths are a lost art in video gaming.

Torment: Tides of Numenera will be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on Feb. 28.
