In case you’ve somehow forgotten how massively huge Grand Theft Auto is, here’s your reminder: It’s selling more copies than ever and making Rockstar Games and publisher Take-Two Interactive more money, too. According to Take-Two, the game has now sold over 75 million copies.
Grand Theft Auto V launched for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 originally in the fall of 2013 before subsequently hitting PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014 and PC in April 2016. And yet, it keeps flying off the shelves. Take-Two says the game sold more in 2016 than it did in 2015, and 2015 was a better year than 2014. Grand Theft Auto Online, the game’s online component, is also continuing to grow – the game saw record numbers in December 2016.

Grand Theft Auto V is utterly unique
So, why is it doing so well? It’s the first game people buy with new consoles, Take-Two says. There might be other open world games, but Grand Theft Auto V has its own reputation. With the exception of maybe something like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, few games appeal to as wide an audience as Rockstar’s open-world crime game does. It’s not just nerds or sports gamers or MMO fans or casual gamers. It’s all of those people.
And it has a reputation for longevity few games can claim. Some of us have a new game in our systems every week. Some people swap out the newest copy of Madden NFL or Call of Duty each year. Grand Theft Auto V, for some, just stays in the system. It’s a time killer with almost endless ways to pass time and memorable characters to jump into while you do it. Even if you manage to get bored of the single-player version, Grand Theft Auto Online has seen a continuous stream of updates since it launched shortly after the core game did back in 2013.
At this point, it’s almost a matter of momentum. Expect Grand Theft Auto V to continue topping charts at least for a little while. And don’t expect Grand Theft Auto VI for even longer.
