Google Assistant for Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X expected in “major” update

When the Google Pixel launched last year, many people wondered why its new powerful AI, dubbed Google Assistant, never rolled out to the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Were they just not powerful enough? Was Google using the feature as a selling point to drive interest in the Pixel? Whatever the case, a new report claims Assistant is headed to both device in a “major” update.

According to 9to5Google’s Stephen Hall, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P owners will finally get to enjoy Google’s brainy AI, which the search giant first introduced at I/O last year. Assistant has slowly started to spread to other devices, including the new Nvidia Shield TV, and is reportedly on its way to the upcoming LG G6.

Hall doesn’t provide any details beyond saying Assistant is coming to Google’s older Nexus devices. It’s unclear what “major” update Google has planned in the near future though the company did just begin testing Android 7.1.2. However, Google has already said that update will primarily be focused on squashing bugs, which doesn’t really qualify as major.

Does Hall mean Android O?

With the LG G6 expected to launch with Google Assistant, perhaps we’ll see the AI hit the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P around then. Which is to say, toward the end of February or early March.

Folks over at XDA Developers have already figured out how to run Assistant on the Nexus 6P, so we know it’s possible. Now, it’s just a matter of Google rolling it out for more users to enjoy.
