Mass Effect dev, BioWare, promising a new IP by March 2018, not an RPG

While BioWare’s Mass Effect: Andromeda is less than two months out, the RPG developer has been working on cooking up something else. In yesterday’s financial call, EA said that we’ll be playing that game before the end of the next March when the company’s financial year ends.

Whatever the game is, it’s set in a new universe. It’s not a Mass Effect, Dragon Age, or Baldur’s Gate game. Or Jade Empire. You get the idea. It’s something else entirely. The new property has been mentioned before by the company, and BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn said in a blog post that the game has been in development since 2012.

The new game will focus on multiplayer

Flynn’s hope for the game is that it will “bring players together in exciting new ways,” and called the game “something fun and new for you to enjoy with your friends,” doubly emphasizing the multiplayer aspect of the game.

EA CEO Andrew House said during the call that the title is “an action-adventure title, not an RPG,” but called it genre-melding and said that it will change the way we “play an action title.” That’s corporate speak, so take it with a grain of salt.

We can expect to see the title at E3 in some fashion, and if I had to pin down a release date, I’d guess around the same time next year as we’re expecting Mass Effect: Andromeda this year – late March.
