So many rumors have promised a new virtual assistant with the Galaxy S8, and now it is all but confirmed by a new Samsung hire on LinkedIn. Their job description confirms the “upcoming AI (Artificial Intelligence) assistant on Galaxy S8” ahead of its official unveiling.
Samsung acquired Viv Labs, a virtual assistant startup founded by the original creators of Siri, last October — fueling speculation that it would finally overhaul S Voice and give us a real Siri competitor with this year’s flagships.
Since then, countless reports and trademark applications have all but confirmed a new assistant called Bixby will arrive this spring with the Galaxy S8. It’s thought to be similar to rivals like Siri, Cortana, and Google Assistant, but with unique features that set it apart.
Those include things like object recognition, and a new payment platform for sending money to friends and family.
Just in case you doubted Bixby will arrive in the coming months, a new Samsung Principal Program Manager has confirmed it on LinkedIn. “Drive the execution and delivery for Samsung’s upcoming AI (Artificial Intelligence) assistant on Galaxy S8,” reads their job description.
It’s unclear who this person is; SamMobile, which first discovered the listing, doesn’t provide a name — but it seems they’ve held this role for less than a year. That makes sense if Samsung has only been working on Bixby since its acquisition of Viv.
But has the company had enough time to ensure Bixby has the polish it will need to compete with the best virtual assistants out there? We’ll have to wait until the Galaxy S8 gets its unveiling in April to find out.
