Final Fantasy XV breaks a million copies in Japan, twice as many sales as every other PS4 hit

In Japan, a game is generally considered a hit if it can cross the 1 million mark. The faster, the better, of course, as games like Monster Hunter and Yo-Kai Watch generally hit the mark right out of the gate.

It’s not often, but some games do slow burn their way to one million copies sold, and Final Fantasy XV has done just that. According to Famitsu, the game has sold an impressive 928,815 physical copies around the country, and a monthly record that tracks digital sales puts the number at 88,533 copies sold between the launch in November and Christmas.

In total, Final Fantasy XV is now a hit in Japan at 1,017,348 copies. Note, the number does not include digital sales after Christmas nor Xbox One sales because… you know…. Japan.

Final Fantasy XV is the best-selling PlayStation 4 game in Japan

It looks like Final Fantasy XV is the game PlayStation really needed to get this ball rolling, When we last checked in with official sales figures, the highest selling game on the console was Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which hadn’t even crossed the half-million point.

Since then, a few games have been released like Persona 5 and Dragon Quest Heroes II, but neither really holds a candle to the Final Fantasy establishment.
