If you’ve been checking out the most recent batch of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild gameplay videos from outlets around the world, you know what’s going on with the game’s horse system. You can find and befriend horses in the game, and you take them to stables around the world to register and name them.
My first thought here? What about Epona? The horse has essentially been a staple of the series since Ocarina of Time. Did these gameplay videos confirm that Epona’s no more?
Speaking with IGN Portugal, Producer Eiji Aonuma says Epona is in Breath of the Wild. Exactly how, when and where you’ll find her remains to be seen.
Could we have done without Epona? Yes, but…
If Aonuma had said that we won’t see Epona in Breath of the Wild, I would have been totally fine with it. Nothing says that we have to have the same exact characters in every single game, right? That goes double for the horse.
Still, as long as I play Zelda, I’ll always have a horse named Epona. If I didn’t know she was in the game, I would have named my first found horse Epona just out of tradition. Heck, I always name the hero Link, too. At least on my first playthrough. After that, the poor adventurer picks up a more ridiculous moniker.
