With a year packed with so many games, boiling our list down to just 10 games was painful. One after another, we had to drop some of the most interesting and notable games for the year from our list. Some of the games we simply didn’t have enough time to play, while others were cut as a matter of personal preference. They’re still, at the very least, notable games and often quite stellar.
Oxenfree was a great take on both point-and-click adventures and teenage nostalgia. Watch Dogs 2 took a boring franchise with a boring character and made it exciting and inspiring. Hitman made episodic gaming work for something other than Telltale stories (finally!). World of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest VII, Odin Sphere, and I am Setsuna were all great reminders that the Japanese RPG is, in fact, alive and kicking.
