Overwatch more than doubled Counter-Strike’s revenue on PC in 2016, crushed the competition

2016 belonged to Overwatch on the PC platform, in terms of generated revenue, at least. The word comes from research firm SuperData, and they have a list of the top five revenue generators on the PC platform for 2016.

Overwatch tops that list by quite a bit. Here’s the rundown:

  • Overwatch – $585.6M
  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – $257.2M
  • Guild Wars 2 – $91.0M
  • Minecraft – $88.7M
  • Fallout 4 – $74.9M

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, as you see, is the game closest to Overwatch in terms of revenue for the year. Granted, that game didn’t drop in 2016, so this is money made entirely of new sales of an older game and microtransactions.

Overwatch is ahead by a lot, though. It doubles Counter-Strike and brought in at least six times the revenue that the other titles on the list did.

Overwatch did it without forced microtransactions, too

In fact, it looks like none of these games require microtransactions to play. They’re not free-to-play, either. These are games that people bought outright, and they generate revenue through extra content or aesthetic purchases.

Did you contribute to the revenue of the top five earners in 2016?
