The first proper teaser for Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 was released on Monday, and it features a return of Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who appeared in the 1982 original.
It’s hard to tell what’s going on. We begin with a voiceover from Ford talking about Replicants, and then quickly cut to Ryan Gosling’s character, Officer K, walking through a desert wasteland. He carefully walks into some kind of old casino—the wording on the carpet says “vintage casino.” (I know, primo investigative work on my part.)
Ford’s Deckard then confronts Officer K, who tells him he used to have his job. “I was good at it.”
Here’s the official Blade Runner 2049 synopsis
Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
The movie’s director, Denis Villeneuve, is coming off his work on Sicario and this year’s Arrival, the latter of which is causing a lot of buzz for the director.
This is the perfect kind of teaser because it not only introduces audiences back into the world of Blade Runner, but it establishes Gosling’s involvement, along with the return of Ford.
Blade Runner 2049 is set for a release on Oct. 2017.
