At PlayStation Experience this past weekend, DotEmu and Sony announced that Windjammers will be released for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in 2017. The SNK cult-classic will feature online play for the first time, and the potential massive audience should only help expand its beloved reputation.
Windjammers is the multiplayer classic we deserve
When it comes to competitive arcade multiplayer games, Windjammers is about as perfect as a game gets without the words “Street Fighter II” in the title. For those who haven’t played it, it’s basically a spin on the classic Pong formula. Get the disk past the other guy, and you get a point. Sweet and simple.
Only, it’s not that simple. DotEmu CEO Cyrille Imbert explains in his passionate blog post on PlayStation Blog.
Windjammers is one of those games that never gets old. It’s simple, well-made, instant fun. However, behind that simplicity lies an ocean of strategy and challenge. To be a decent player you’ll need to master a diverse set of skills, i.e. knowing when to toss your disc, and when to launch a super-custom or hammer throw to wrest the momentum from your opponent. Each frame matters, precision is key, and self-control is critical.
“Easy to pick up, difficult to master” is the best compliment you can give a game like this, but strategy isn’t all that makes this classic great. As you can see in the trailer, those slick SNK sprites still look brilliant to this day. No company made better sprites than SNK back during the peak of its creativity in the 90s.
Windjammers is coming to the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in 2017. Hopefully, it will have a place in the herald of classics-turned-eSports with this new release.
