The Shovel Knight prequel debuted at the Game Awards, and it looks fantastic

Yacht Club Games has been hard at work on the expansion content for Shovel Knight ever since releasing the game. We have Plague Knight thanks to their efforts, but I know I’m ready for more.

While it’s not due until the spring of next year, Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment, a prequel to the original game, made its debut in trailer form last night at The Game Awards. The music! The mechanics! The look!

I’m playing Shovel Knight again once the holidays die down. Here’s the trailer. Get excited.

Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment will be a free update!

Just like all of the extra content that’s being made for Shovel Knight, this will be free. Specter Knight’s campaign joins Plague Knight’s as the second free offering since Shovel Knight‘s initial launch.

What’s it about? Here’s Yacht Club Games on that subject:

While Plague of Shadows followed an alternate parallel campaign, Specter Knight travels a new path in this amazing prequel. It’s your mission as Specter Knight to recruit the Order of No Quarter for The Enchantress! Specter Knight’s campaign truly is his own adventure, and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it this Spring.

You had me at “Shovel,” Yacht Club.

If you still haven’t played Shovel Knight, get on it. It’s a glorious title that perfectly harks back to the retro days of gaming while maintaining modern quality standards.
