The words “Kia” and “sports” and “car” aren’t often seen together, my brain usually puts “Kia” with “affordable” and “sedan,” after all. But that’s set to change early next month. Kia just started teasing its very first sportscar, a vehicle it will unveil during an event at the Detroit Auto Show on January 8. Kia’s countdown reminds us that’s just 38 days from now.
Kia’s sports car is teased in a quick YouTube clip — it’s just 35 seconds long — where you’re in the seat of a racecar as it takes tight turns around a course. You hear the engine revving, gears shifting and audio from the pit… almost like Kia’s teasing a video game. The car tops out at 244 km/h (151 miles per hour.) Not something I’m used to jotting down when writing about Kia.
In fact, if Road Show didn’t highlight that Kia is indeed expected to launch a “Kia GT” sports car, I would have thought this was just a teaser for something else. That name, by the way, isn’t confirmed just yet. Also, it wouldn’t be the first time an automaker has teased a car only to turn the end of the clip into a joke. Remember the fully-electric McLaren P1?
This is just “Episode 1” of Kia’s teaser, which means we should expect more in the coming weeks as January 8 quickly approaches.
