An alleged email from Apple CEO Tim Cook suggests that Apple’s AirPods, which have been delayed for unknown reasons, may end up being available before the holidays after all. The email was forwarded to MacRumors from a reader who says he or she reached out to Tim Cook directly.
Here’s how the convo went down, according to MacRumors:
Customer’s comment: “Give us a release date. I really bought in to the wireless vision you painted. Now I’m stuck waiting with my EarPods but can’t charge my 7 at the same time which I need to do at work. Let us know if it’s a month or 6 months, because then I’ll just buy some other wireless headphones.”
Tim Cook’s response: “Thanks for your note. Sorry for the delay—we are finalizing them and I anticipate we will begin to ship over the next few weeks.”
I’m not sure I buy it
I hope the AirPods are available soon. While I’m not yet convinced I want them for myself — they look a bit goofy, after all — I find the product and the pairing process rather compelling. I’m also not 100 percent sold on this email being legitimate. Sure, Tim Cook replies to emails from time-to-time, but this is a pretty big deal. Apple should make it well known that the AirPods are coming if, indeed, they’re really on the horizon.
I bet Apple sells out of these things faster than the NES Classic on a Target shelf if they’re available before the holidays. There’s been so much hype about AirPods since they launched and, given the lack of the headphone jack on the iPhone 7, I’m guessing consumers are ready to go bonkers over the new buds. They’re delayed for a reason, though. That has me worried. Is it a quality control problem? An issue with battery life? Those weren’t really complaints in early pre-production reviews. Perhaps supply is too slim.
We’ll let you know if we get any official word from Apple on availability, for now just consider that there seems to be some possibility, however small, that AirPods will ship in a few weeks.
