When we think about Australia, the images that come to mind are often of the Outback. Vast desert plains and mesas, thick forests, a land covered in things that can kill you. But Australia has snow, too. They even have their own alps. Thanks to Australia’s diverse landscape, snow is coming to Forza for the first time.
Arriving on December 13 is Forza Horizon 3‘s Blizzard Mountain expansion, which Microsoft and Turn 10 say will include not just snow, but extreme elevations and blizzards as well, making sure all those off-road vehicles will be put to the test. The campaign includes 50 new events with new race types including Hill Climb, Descent, and Blizzard events.
There are a few cars coming with the expansion, but don’t expect anything from Ferrari or Lamborghini in here. The 2016 Ford GYMKHANA 9 Focus RS RX headlines the group, with other cars from Ford, Lancia and others suited perfectly to the snow. If you do want to take that hypercar out into the winter wonderland, snow tires will be available, too.
Things are looking up from here
One downfall of the Forza series has been just how flat it is. Especially in Horizon, places like the Colorado setting of the first game and of Australia’s diverse land cry out for sharp inclines and harsh conditions. This could be one of the most refreshing additions to the series yet, if Turn 10 can pull it off. The first Forza Motorsport game was such a huge change from Gran Turismo partly because it had not just lap races but point-to-point races down mountains and things like that. This addition of elevation could also signal a willingness from the collective group behind the Forza games to mix things up a bit more. I’d love to see those downhill races and hill climbs return to Forza Motorsport as well as Horizon, and the Blizzard Mountain expansion gives me a little hope that that might be the case.
