AT&T announced on Friday that it will host a press event in New York City on November 28. That’s where the company says it’ll finally reveal all of the details of DirecTV Now, its on-demand streaming service.
DirecTV could be a very compelling product. It’s set to compete with Sling TV and PlayStation Vue for subscription dollars from cord-cutters (like myself.) AT&T already has the contracts with enough networks to build a product that’s going to be compelling to consumers and we know that at least one plan will cost $35 and will offer 100 channels. There might be other options, though, like add-ons for services such as HBO or additional content. Competitors already follow this business model.
Sling TV, for example, offers two base packages, blue or orange, that can be combined into a single package. It also offers additional add-ons for $5 per month. PlayStation Vue has four plans with prices ranging from $39.99 per month to $74.99 per month. It also just cut access to Viacom content, which means it no longer offers MTV, Comedy Central and 18 other channels. AT&T should have that available.
DirecTV Now incentives?
Finally, we’ll learn how AT&T plans to attract customers with incentives. Rumor has it the company is planning to woo potential subscribers with a free Apple TV or free Amazon Fire TV, depending on whether or not they sign up and pay for monthly plans in advance.
