Pokémon Sun and Moon launch tomorrow, but the game is already in Nintendo’s record books. Dengeki Online reports that Nintendo shipped 10 million copies worldwide, making it the biggest launch that the platform has ever seen.

Nintendo credits the massive success of this new generation to the rise of Pokémon GO, which launches back in July to astronomical numbers. Nintendo’s long term plan with mobile games is to inspire fans to buy their main games after giving them just a taste with the smaller mobile titles.

If Pokémon GO is the reason for the upswing in popularity that Pokémon Sun and Moon have seen, then good for Nintendo for foreseeing this trend.

Pokémon Sun and Moon’s universal acclaim probably has helped too

Maybe the fact that the game is tearing up the critics’ circle is also has something to do with its success. Many are saying that this is the biggest leap that the Pokémon series has taken in a long time, and fans seem much more excited about this one than the last two.

Pokémon Sun and Moon launch tomorrow on the Nintendo 3DS.
