BlackBerry promises new QWERTY smartphone

BlackBerry may be outsourcing the manufacturing and design of its smartphones, but it isn’t done launching devices with hardware QWERTY keyboards. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, CEO John Chen promised that a new one is on the way.

“We have one keyboard phone I promised people,” Chen said. “It’s coming.” This would be in stark contrast to what BlackBerry has done most recently with the DTEK50 and DTEK60 smartphones. Those devices are basically rebranded Alcatel devices with BlackBerry’s software and security built in.

Chen’s comments suggest that BlackBerry isn’t completely outsourcing everything just yet; unless we’re going to see some sort of Alcatel smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard that just gets rebranded again, but I doubt it.

One last BlackBerry Bold, please

I’m sort of hoping for a new BlackBerry Bold-type smartphone with a full keyboard and Android to boot. The BlackBerry Priv was excellent, with its slide-out keyboard, but I’m kind of hoping for one last classic “hurrah!”
