Facebook is telling users they’re dead (Update)

Are you alive right now? Facebook might not think so. Some sort of bizarre bug going around the social network is suggesting that some users, alive and well, are actually dead.

Check the screenshot above of Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, who is also listed as dead. Various pages, perhaps some of your friends or even you, have been tagged with a memorial banner. “We hope people who love Mark will find comfort in the things others share to remember and celebrate his life,” the page says of Zuck.

Facebook thinks people are dead

There doesn’t appear to be a rhyme or reason for why some people are alive and others are dead. Thankfully, it appears that I’m still alive and well. I’m just not so sure about you.

Update: A Facebook spokesperson reached out to say the bug has now been fixed. You can read the statement below:

For a brief period today, a message meant for memorialized profiles was mistakenly posted to other accounts. This was a terrible error that we have now fixed. We are very sorry that this happened and we worked as quickly as possible to fix it.
